ORGANIC COTTON

More than 80% of JOHNNYLOVE’s cotton garments are made from organic cotton.The range covers T-shirts, jackets, shirts, blouses, pants and knits.

 We believe organic cotton is better for the planet, even though there are also drawbacks to organic cotton farming. Organic cotton is grown from non-genetically modified seeds, without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. The single biggest problem with conventional cotton farming is the massive and intensive use of synthetic pesticides and insecticides. Runoff from heavy synthetic fertilizers and toxic chemicals degrades soil health, pollutes nearby waterways, and creates dead zones in aquatic ecosystems. Organic cotton growing is an alternative that helps preserve biodiversity, as well as continued access to clean water and food supplies in neighboring communities. It also leads to better working conditions and health for cotton farmers, as they are not at risk of exposure to pesticides.

Another general concern with cotton farming is high water consumption. There is debate over whether farming methods have any impact on this. What is certain is that 80% of organic cotton crops are rain-fed, thereby consuming considerably less irrigation water than conventional cotton, of which only 27% of crops are rain-fed.

The fabrics we use are GOTS certified, which covers both the environmental and social impacts of the farming and production of the fabrics.

We use organic cotton whenever we can choose it without compromising on quality, as we believe quality matters even more from a sustainability perspective. When you buy better quality, you can buy less in the long run.
